How to choose a foldable phone
Foldables split into four distinct shapes, and the right one depends on what you actually do with your phone, not which is newest.
Start with the shape, not the spec sheet
Every foldable on the market is one of four shapes: book, flip, wide, or tri-fold. That shape decides more about daily use than chip speed or camera megapixels ever will, so it's the first decision to make, not the last.
The best foldable is the one whose shape matches how you already hold your phone, not the one with the biggest inner screen.
What actually differs across shapes
Shape | Best for | Pocketability |
|---|---|---|
Book | Reading, multitasking, a tablet that calls | Thick closed, best in a bag |
Flip | Pocket size, cover-screen quick tasks | Smallest folded footprint |
Wide | One-handed use unfolded, work on the go | Thin both ways |
Tri-fold | Maximum screen, willing to trade thickness | Bulkiest of the four |
Don't skip the hinge
Hinge durability varies more between brands than the spec sheet suggests. If you can, try opening and closing a demo unit a few dozen times in-store before deciding; a hinge that feels loose on day one only gets looser.
